Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will transform into an illuminated insect wonderland on Saturday, August 30, as it kicks off a new round of Twilight Safari Party & Movie Night programming—a family-focused after-dark experience that blends tropical biodiversity with outdoor entertainment.
The interactive evening event, which repeats later in September, gives visitors of all ages a new way to experience the garden after hours, complete with giant robotic insect sculptures, a twilight safari tour, interactive dance parties, and a screening of the animated film A Bug’s Life under the stars.
Events run from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., with discounted ticket bundles for families and add-on options like picnic baskets and mini cocktails. The programming is designed to be immersive and educational, offering a rare glimpse into nighttime pollinators and tropical insect behavior.
A tropical safari after dark
At the core of the evening is the Twilight Bug Safari, a guided exploration of the garden’s insect-themed installations and natural habitats. The safari allows guests to observe the rarely seen nocturnal behavior of insects, while also navigating a glowing trail of oversized robotic bugs, which light up pathways and garden groves.
From glistening fireflies to fluttering moths, the experience reintroduces Fairchild’s 83-acre landscape as a dynamic, nighttime ecosystem—one that comes alive in ways rarely seen during daylight hours.
Families can also visit the Wings of the Tropics Butterfly Exhibit, which remains open from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. during the evening events. The climate-controlled conservatory is home to hundreds of exotic butterfly species, including the Blue Morpho, whose iridescent wings take on surreal shimmer in low light. Visitors can watch as butterflies perch, glide, and rest in twilight conditions rarely witnessed by the public.
Dance, bubbles and bug-sized cinema
In addition to the safari and exhibit, Fairchild’s twilight program includes the Bubble Bash Dance Dash, a kinetic dance experience that invites children to jump, spin, and groove through clouds of bubbles on the main event lawn. Live music and family-friendly beats accompany the dance floor, turning the garden into a party atmosphere as dusk falls.
As the evening winds down, guests are invited to spread out on blankets or lawn chairs for the Big Bug Cinema, which will screen Pixar’s A Bug’s Life (G-rated) on a large outdoor screen. Seating is first-come, first-served, and attendees are welcome to bring snacks or purchase one of the garden’s pre-packed picnic baskets for two.
Additional themed refreshments are available for pre-order, including mini cocktails, Grub-N-Go snack kits, and other family-friendly options designed for outdoor dining.
Programming with purpose
While the event is playful, its purpose remains aligned with Fairchild’s broader mission: to connect people to the natural world through engagement and education. Each element of the Twilight Safari is designed to spark curiosity and create lasting impressions around insects, plants, and pollinators—especially in young visitors.
The garden’s programming staff emphasizes that even the fun elements—the bubbles, the dance, the cinema—are embedded in a framework of environmental literacy and biodiversity awareness.
The evening hours also help accommodate working families and expand access to one of Coral Gables’ most beloved civic spaces during cooler, more flexible hours.
