Editorial Policy

The Coral Gables Gazette is an independent local news publication covering Coral Gables, Florida. Our mission is to provide readers with timely, relevant and responsible reporting about the people, institutions, businesses, neighborhoods and issues that shape the City Beautiful.

Editorial Independence

The Coral Gables Gazette maintains editorial independence from advertisers, sponsors, political organizations, candidates, businesses, government agencies and other outside interests. Advertising and other commercial relationships do not determine our news coverage or editorial decisions.

Our editorial decisions are based on news value, public interest, relevance to our community and the information available to us at the time of publication.

Accuracy and Fairness

We strive to publish information that is accurate, fair and presented in appropriate context. Before publication, we make reasonable efforts to verify important facts and distinguish confirmed information from allegations, claims, opinions and speculation.

When reporting on disputes, controversies or allegations involving individuals or organizations, we seek to provide those affected with a reasonable opportunity to respond. A person’s inclusion in a news report does not necessarily imply wrongdoing.

Sources

We use a variety of sources, including public records, government documents, court records, interviews, news releases, public meetings, firsthand reporting and information provided by individuals and organizations.

We evaluate information based on its reliability, relevance and ability to be independently verified. When appropriate, we identify sources so readers can understand where information originated.

Anonymous Sources

The Gazette may grant anonymity to a source when there is a legitimate journalistic reason to protect that person’s identity. Anonymous information is evaluated carefully, and we may seek additional confirmation before publishing significant claims based on anonymous sources.

News, Opinion and Commentary

The Gazette distinguishes between news reporting and opinion. News stories are intended to present factual information and relevant context. Opinion pieces, editorials, columns and commentary express a viewpoint and are identified accordingly.

Editorial opinions represent the views expressed by the author or editorial board and should not automatically be interpreted as statements of fact or as the position of every contributor to the Gazette.

City Hall Confidential

City Hall Confidential is a commentary and gossip feature of the Coral Gables Gazette focused on the personalities, politics, rumors, disputes, relationships, controversies and behind-the-scenes activity surrounding Coral Gables government and civic life. City Hall Confidential is intentionally different from the Gazette’s traditional news reporting. Items appearing in this feature may include rumors, tips, observations, commentary, speculation, opinion and information supplied by third parties. Such material is presented for its entertainment, commentary or public-interest value and should not automatically be understood as independently verified fact. Where appropriate, the Gazette may identify information as an allegation, rumor, claim, opinion or account attributed to a particular source. Publication of an item does not necessarily mean that the Gazette endorses the statements, conclusions or characterizations contained in it. Readers should distinguish City Hall Confidential from the Gazette’s reported news coverage, which is presented as journalism and is subject to the publication’s editorial standards for accuracy, sourcing and attribution. Individuals or organizations mentioned in City Hall Confidential may contact the Gazette regarding factual errors or material inaccuracies. When warranted, the Gazette may update, clarify, annotate or remove material at its editorial discretion.

Corrections and Updates

When we discover that a published story contains a factual error, we seek to correct it promptly and transparently. Corrections may be made to the article itself and, when appropriate, identified in a correction notice.

Articles may also be updated when significant new information becomes available. Material changes may be reflected in the article’s updated date.

Readers who believe an article contains a factual error are encouraged to contact the Gazette with the specific information and supporting documentation when available. Visit our Corrections page to learn more.

Conflicts of Interest

We seek to identify and avoid conflicts of interest that could compromise editorial judgment. Contributors are expected to disclose relevant personal, professional or financial relationships when those relationships could reasonably affect the credibility or perception of their reporting.

Advertising and Sponsored Content

Advertising supports the operation of the Coral Gables Gazette. Advertisers do not purchase favorable news coverage, and advertising relationships do not guarantee editorial coverage.

Sponsored, promotional or other paid content will be identified in a manner that distinguishes it from independent editorial reporting.

News Tips and Submissions

We welcome news tips, story ideas, photographs, documents, letters and other information from the Coral Gables community. Submission of material does not guarantee publication.

Information submitted to the Gazette may be reviewed, verified and edited before publication. Readers should not submit confidential or sensitive information through a public form unless they understand the potential risks of electronic communication.

Photographs, Video and Other Media

We make reasonable efforts to identify the source of photographs, video and other visual material used in our coverage. When material is provided by a third party, appropriate credit will be given when the source is known and credit is required or appropriate.

AI-Generated and AI-Assisted Content

The Gazette may use technology and artificial intelligence tools to assist with certain administrative, research, production or editing tasks. Editorial responsibility remains with the Gazette and its contributors. AI tools are not a substitute for editorial judgment, source verification or fact-checking.
