Ahead of America’s 250th birthday, Keep Coral Gables Beautiful is turning to flowers and volunteer service as acts of civic remembrance. Volunteers will gather Saturday morning at the War Memorial Youth Center to create a red, white and blue landscape display around the site’s Blue Star Memorial, which the city says honors those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The event, called Planting for Patriotism, runs on June 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. at 405 University Drive. It is free, open to the public and eligible volunteers may request documentation of their hours.

A living memorial, rooted in history

The Blue Star Memorial program dates to 1944, when the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs planted about 8,000 dogwood trees along a 5½-mile stretch of highway as a living memorial to members of the Armed Forces during World War II. The National Council of State Garden Clubs, now National Garden Clubs, adopted the program the following year, helping turn the Blue Star marker into a national symbol of service and remembrance.

Garden club members envisioned a living memorial — preferring to beautify and preserve the country those in uniform had fought for rather than erect stone monuments in their honor. That philosophy has guided the program for more than eight decades.

Today, more than 4,000 Blue and Gold Star Memorial Markers stand across the country. Gold Star markers were later created to recognize families who lost a loved one in military service.

The Coral Gables planting connects to a national initiative announced last Veterans Day. Keep America Beautiful and the National Garden Clubs joined forces to enhance areas around memorial markers by removing litter and debris, planting flowers and greenery, and restoring these spaces — with a special emphasis on red, white and blue plantings to honor all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Blue/Gold Star Memorial Grant supporting Saturday’s event flows from that partnership.

Timed to America’s 250th

The planting is aligned with America250, the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The initiative, established by Congress as a nonpartisan effort, invites communities across the country to mark the occasion through reflection, service and shared civic memory.

For Keep Coral Gables Beautiful, a city program, the timing adds weight to what might otherwise be a routine beautification effort. Planting living color around a memorial to active-duty service members — nine days before Independence Day — fuses civic pride with community action in a way that neither act accomplishes alone.

A civic space at the Youth Center

The War Memorial Youth Center carries the weight of the occasion. Located at 405 University Drive, the center has long served as a civic anchor in Coral Gables, providing programming for young residents while carrying the memory of those who served in its very name.

Volunteers on Saturday will work to create a landscape display that reinforces that identity, surrounding the Blue Star Memorial with plantings intended to welcome residents and visitors year-round. The city has positioned the effort as part of its broader commitment to community beautification, service and patriotic remembrance.

The event is organized through the city’s Keep Coral Gables Beautiful program, which coordinates volunteer-driven environmental and beautification initiatives across the municipality.
