Mahjong tiles will share table space with fried chicken sandwiches and waffle fries Sunday when a South Florida social club returns to Fuku on Miracle Mile.
888 Mahjong Social will host Fuku x Mahjong from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at the restaurant, 135 Miracle Mile. The afternoon is designed for both beginners and experienced players, with guided instruction at some tables and open play at others.
Hong Kong rules, taught at the table
The social uses Chinese mahjong played under Hong Kong-style rules.
No previous experience is required. Organizers say instructors will guide newcomers through the game, while players who already know the rules may join open tables.
Mahjong is generally played by four people who draw and discard illustrated tiles while trying to assemble a winning hand, commonly made up of four sets and a pair. More than 40 variations are played around the world, with differences in scoring, permitted combinations and special tiles.
The Hong Kong style has become particularly visible in a new generation of social clubs that present the game less as a formal tournament and more as a communal night out. Similar groups in New York and Los Angeles have paired mahjong with restaurants, music and pop-up gatherings aimed at younger players looking for an offline way to meet.
888 Mahjong Social follows that model in South Florida, placing guided play in restaurants and bars rather than requiring newcomers to arrive with an established group or prior knowledge of the game.
The three-hour format gives beginners time to learn the tiles and basic structure before attempting full hands, while experienced players can move directly into open play.
A returning Miracle Mile pairing
Sunday’s event continues a collaboration between 888 Mahjong Social and Fuku rather than introducing it for the first time. Earlier Fuku x Mahjong gatherings were advertised at the Coral Gables restaurant in May and July.
The restaurant itself is still relatively new to the city.
Fuku opened its Coral Gables location March 11, giving the David Chang-created fried chicken concept its first standalone restaurant in South Florida. The brand began with an off-menu chicken sandwich at Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York and later expanded into restaurants and sports and entertainment venues.
Its menu centers on brined fried chicken sandwiches served on butter-toasted potato rolls. Options include the original sandwich with Fuku mayonnaise and pickles, a sweet-and-spicy version with pickled daikon and a sandwich topped with slaw and miso-scallion ranch.
The restaurant also serves tenders, waffle fries and sides including cucumber salad, potato salad, spicy slaw and garlic chicken rice.
The 20 percent event discount applies to food and beverages purchased by registered participants, according to the organizer.
A social game with room for newcomers
Mahjong can appear forbidding to people encountering it for the first time. The game uses suits of bamboo, circles and characters, along with honor tiles depicting winds and dragons, and scoring varies widely among traditions.
The appeal of a guided social is that newcomers do not have to master the full system before sitting down. Organizers describe the afternoon as beginner-friendly and centered as much on community as competition.
Players may attend alone rather than bringing a complete table, according to the event information. Seating assignments and guided tables allow participants to be matched with others during the afternoon.
Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Registered guests receive 20 percent off food and beverages during the event.
