Caffe Vialetto, a landmark Italian eatery in Coral Gables, announced it will close after “26 wonderful years.” Mournful yet grateful, the owners shared the news July 16, on Instagram, posting a slideshow of moments captured over the decades—weddings, family celebrations and quiet dinners.
The Instagram post reads, “After decades of flavor and friendship, we’re saying goodbye. To our incredible community…we are closing our doors at Caffe Vialetto…What started as a humble eatery has grown into something far greater…Thank you for making us part of your celebrations, your quiet evenings, and your traditions.”
Founded in 1999 by Marcelo Chopa and Ernie Fernandez, the restaurant at 4019 S. Le Jeune Road, in the burgeoning Merrick Park area, became a go-to setting for romantic dinners, family milestones and celebratory evenings. Caffe Vialetto’s ambience offered warmth for anniversaries, bridal showers, birthday parties and business dinners.
In a win that underscored its enduring appeal, the Miami New Times recently listed Caffe Vialetto among Coral Gables’ best restaurants—just one month before this announcement. The combined honor and impending closure have drawn heartfelt reactions on social platforms, with patrons voicing gratitude and sorrow: “Wishing you the best! I’m heartbroken!” and “We are so grateful to you. More than just wonderful meals. Mi familia!”
The restaurant’s signature dishes—such as pear-and-gorgonzola ravioli in a fondue sauce, beer-battered shrimp tempura with chili-guava drizzle, and inventive desserts like “The Funk”—reflected a flair for inventive Italian cuisine with Latin-Caribbean inflections.
Caffe Vialetto’s final night of service is set for Saturday, August 16. The announcement hinted at future plans: “another project—or location—may be on the horizon soon!”

Legacy in a changing landscape
Caffe Vialetto closed in a Coral Gables landscape marked by rapid growth. The restaurant’s unassuming location, once one of few standalone venues, became hemmed in by urban development.
Local food critic Nicole Lopez‑Alvar described the closure as “heart‑wrenching”, noting the restaurant exemplified “family warmth” and “inventive fusion.”
Community response & what’s next
The Instagram announcement drew an immediate wave of support, with comments like “My favorite restaurant! I’m heartbroken.” Patrons mentioned longstanding traditions tied to the restaurant’s intimate dining rooms and celebratory dishes.
Some diners hold out hope for a return in a new setting. The owners hinted at plans extending beyond the closure, without detailing them.
Broader context of restaurant closures
Caffe Vialetto joins a growing list of beloved closures across the Miami area in 2025. Its exit from the City Beautiful stands alongside neighborhoods like Coconut Grove, where cherished institutions are also shuttering.
Economic pressure, rising rents, shifting consumer habits and regional competition have collectively impacted long-standing restaurants—and Caffe Vialetto’s closing invites reflection on how growth and tradition can coexist in Coral Gables.
Fond farewell & hopeful future
For now, residents and visitors alike can savor the final month of Caffe Vialetto’s signature flavors and intimate ambiance. The owners express deep gratitude: “we’re endlessly grateful for your support, your stories, and your appetite.”
Caffe Vialetto’s closure marks the end of an era even as it may signal a fresh opportunity. Whether the restaurant reappears in a new venue remains unknown—but for many, its legacy will endure in fond memories and future possibilities.

This is truly a huge loss! I have so many great memories of incredible meals at this place. I could walk in, and ask the waiter what I wanted. Just a few questions, and he would come out with the perfect meal for me. Once, it was ostrich, which I had never tried before. Delicious! Then the friend who came in with me and I both told friends that Sesame Street was canceled – we ate Big Bird that night.
