Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will remain open after dark Friday for an evening of lantern-lit paths, telescope viewing, guided meditation and optional culinary and painting experiences beneath a nearly full moon.
Moonlight Garden at Fairchild runs from 8 to 10:30 p.m. on July 31, offering visitors a chance to explore portions of the 83-acre garden after its regular daytime hours. General admission costs $35, or $30 for Fairchild members, with several experiences and food-and-drink packages available at additional cost.
The program revives a tradition that Fairchild describes as once being among its most popular ways to experience the grounds: walking the garden by moonlight. Rather than building the evening around a single performance, organizers have divided the property into a series of settings devoted to astronomy, quiet reflection, art, food and the altered atmosphere of a tropical landscape after sunset.
A familiar garden after dark
The central experience is a self-guided walk along paths marked by candles and lanterns. Fairchild says music will drift through parts of the grounds, with mist added around the rainforest landscape.
The change in light is part of the attraction. Palms and other tropical plantings that are familiar by day take on different forms as the sun disappears, while flowering plants that open or release stronger fragrances at night become more prominent.
The evening also turns the sounds of the garden inside out. Daytime birds recede, replaced by insects and other nocturnal activity.
It is a different way of seeing a landscape designed for long views. Fairchild’s grounds were planned by William Lyman Phillips, a landscape architect associated with the firm established by Frederick Law Olmsted. The garden opened to the public in 1938 on land assembled by founder Robert H. Montgomery and named for plant explorer David Fairchild.
Although the event is promoted as a full-moon experience, the astronomical full moon arrives two days earlier, on July 29. The moon is expected to remain about 97 percent illuminated on Friday and rise in Miami at approximately 9:32 p.m., placing its appearance near the middle of the event rather than at the opening.
Telescopes and nighttime science
Astronomers will set up telescopes on the Bailey Palm Glade for celestial viewing, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The timing should allow guests to watch the moon rise shortly before the second round of evening activities. The bright moon may make faint objects more difficult to see, but its surface should provide an accessible target for telescope viewing.
Fairchild also plans to open its Growing Beyond Earth Innovation Studio for nighttime exploration. The program is part of the garden’s collaboration with NASA on research into growing food in space and other controlled environments.
The astronomy component is included with general admission.
Meditation, music and a place to linger
A Wellness Terrace at the Allée Overlook will offer a quieter alternative to the astronomy field and lounge areas.
Guided meditation sessions are scheduled for 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., accompanied by informal mindfulness activities and mandala flower art. The terrace is intended as a low-noise area for guests who want to step away from the event’s social spaces.
At the Lower Cycad Vista, the Star Bar Lounge will provide seating, ambient music and food and drinks for purchase. General admission includes access to the lounge but not the refreshments.
The structure makes the evening less like a conventional festival with a fixed stage and more like an open itinerary. Guests can move between the garden walk, telescopes, wellness programming and lounge without following a prescribed order.
Fairchild describes the event as adult-oriented, although general admission is not restricted to adults. Alcohol-related activities require guests to be at least 21 and present identification.
Painting and a botanical tasting menu
Two premium activities are offered in sessions at 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
The Moon Painting Experience is a guided session at the Lower Cycad Vista, using the surrounding garden and moonlit setting as its subject. The add-on costs $25, or $55 when bundled with general admission. Advance reservations are required, and guests are asked to arrive 10 minutes before their session.
The 21-and-older Garden Pairing Experience is a one-hour, three-course tasting on the Glasshouse Café patio. The menu combines tropical ingredients with wine pairings.
The first course pairs peach and prosciutto on breadfruit crostini with rosemary balsamic glaze, basil oil and sauvignon blanc. A second course combines goat cheese, anise-spiced honey, apricot preserves and pistachio with rosé. The final course is a salad of greens, pickled beets, cucumber, Gorgonzola and mango dressed with tamarind-rum vinaigrette and served with red wine.
The tasting costs $50 on its own or $75 with admission. The menu may change depending on seasonal availability.
Guests seeking a less structured food option may order charcuterie for two. Packages cost $95 with water or $125 with prosecco and include cheeses, cured meat, seasonal fruit, nuts, olives, honey and sweets. They may be purchased in advance or at the event while supplies last.
Miniature cocktail and alcohol-free mocktail flights also are listed among the event offerings.
A one-night return
The July 31 event is currently listed as a single evening rather than a recurring summer series. General-admission tickets may be available at the entrance, depending on capacity, but the painting and tasting packages require advance purchase.
The event will take place rain or shine. Outside food and beverages are not permitted, and tickets are neither refundable nor transferable.
