Coral Gables residents will have a chance to connect with local first responders in a relaxed and festive setting as the city celebrates National Night Out on Tuesday, October 7, from 4-8 p.m. at Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Blvd. The annual event, held nationwide, is designed to strengthen ties between law enforcement, emergency services, and the communities they serve.

Hosted in partnership with the Coral Gables Police Department, Coral Gables Fire Department, and the University of Miami Police Department, this year’s gathering promises a full lineup of family-friendly activities—from bounce houses and games to a live Police K9 unit demonstration and music provided by a DJ.

The event is free and open to the public, with no registration required.

National tradition with local impact

National Night Out began in 1984 as a grassroots effort to promote neighborhood safety and community-police partnerships. What started as a porchlight campaign has grown into an evening of block parties, barbecues, and public meet-and-greets held annually in over 16,000 communities across the country.

In Coral Gables, the event has become a yearly tradition that allows families to interact with first responders in a festive, low-pressure setting. It’s a chance for children to explore emergency vehicles, watch real-time demonstrations, and meet the people who serve their community.

“National Night Out provides our first responders the opportunity to build stronger ties with the community. It also provides a great opportunity for residents to meet their neighbors,” said Coral Gables Police Chief Edward J. Hudak, Jr.

Temple Judea hosts community gathering

This year’s venue, Temple Judea, offers shaded outdoor areas and accessible parking, making it a welcoming setting for an event focused on neighborhood connection. Located along Granada Boulevard, the synagogue has previously hosted civic and community events in Coral Gables.

Strengthening community connections

City officials and organizers emphasize that National Night Out is not just about festivities—it’s about fostering trust and familiarity between residents and emergency personnel. The presence of multiple agencies, including Coral Gables Police and Fire and the University of Miami Police Department, reflects a unified approach to public safety outreach.

These events give residents a chance to meet responders outside of emergency situations—an opportunity to ask questions, build rapport, and get to know the individuals behind the badges. For families with children, it also serves as a fun and educational introduction to local public safety services.
