Coral Gables is reminding residents and visitors that free public Wi-Fi already extends across much of the city, from downtown commercial corridors and neighborhood parks to municipal buildings and the city’s trolley fleet.
The Innovation and Technology Department’s current online listing identifies 28 sites and service areas with public internet access. The network is part of the city’s broader smart-city program, which uses broadband infrastructure, sensors and digital services to connect public facilities and commercial districts.
The total represents continued growth from June 2022, when the city said it had completed Wi-Fi installations at 20 sites and had recently added coverage outside the Coral Gables Museum.
Downtown, trolleys and parks
The city lists free public Wi-Fi along three major commercial corridors: Miracle Mile, Giralda Plaza and the Alhambra Circle financial district.
Passengers also have access inside Coral Gables trolleys while riding.
Seven parks and recreation locations appear on the list: Salvadore Park, Kerdyk Tennis Center, Lamar Louise Curry Park, Riviera Park, Balboa Park, Pierce Park and Pittman Park.
The coverage gives residents places to connect outside the downtown business district, although the city does not publish a map showing the precise reach of the signal within each park or corridor.
Municipal buildings make up most of the list
Seventeen civic, recreational and historic locations are included:
City Hall; the Development Services Center; the War Memorial Youth Center; the Adult Activity Center; Coral Gables Country Club; Venetian Pool; Fink Studio; the Passport Office; the Public Safety Building; Fire Stations 2 and 3; the city’s facilities on 72nd Avenue; Parking Garage 7 on Minorca Avenue; the Trolley Building; the Historic Department; Merrick House; and the outdoor area surrounding the Coral Gables Museum.
The museum access point serves its open plaza and portions of Aragon Avenue and Salzedo Street, an area used for public art and outdoor events. When the city announced that installation in 2022, it described it as part of the Smart Districts–Broadband Infrastructure Expansion Project.
Additional hotspots at downtown kiosks
The city says another layer of free internet access is available around its IKE public-information kiosks.
Those hotspots operate along Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Biltmore Way, Miracle Mile, Giralda Plaza and Alhambra Circle. In areas where the broader municipal Wi-Fi network is already present, the kiosk hotspot provides an overlapping connection.
The kiosks should not be confused with the city’s smart poles.
City records describe smart poles installed in the Alhambra Circle financial corridor that provide public Wi-Fi while also carrying cameras, traffic and environmental sensors and other equipment connected to the city’s Community Intelligence Center.
Part of a wider technology program
Public Wi-Fi is one element of a broader city technology system that includes open-data applications, real-time sensors, digital mapping and online municipal services.
The city has promoted the downtown network not only as a public convenience but as an economic-development tool. Its smart-city materials say free Wi-Fi and pedestrian data can help businesses understand activity patterns and attract visitors to commercial districts.
Coral Gables also has received national and international recognition for projects involving broadband connectivity, digital inclusion, smart infrastructure and its Community Intelligence Center.
How to connect
The city’s public Wi-Fi page does not identify the official network name, estimated speeds, time limits or data restrictions.
Residents should look for instructions or signage at the individual facility and confirm the correct network before connecting. Questions may be directed to the Innovation and Technology Department through the city’s main number, 305-446-6800.
