The Coral Gables Art Cinema opens the new year with a red-carpet flourish, presenting the Southeastern U.S. exclusive premiere of The Choral, a first-run British period drama anchored by Ralph Fiennes and written by one of England’s most revered literary figures.

The film opens Friday, January 9, following a members-only preview screening on January 8. Friday night features a Red Carpet Event with film and reception, underscoring the Art Cinema’s role as a regional home for prestige international releases.

A wartime story rooted in music and moral tension

Set in 1916 Yorkshire, The Choral unfolds far from the trenches of the Western Front, yet remains deeply shaped by the war’s absence and upheaval. With most of its adult male singers conscripted, the Ramsden Choral Society faces dissolution. Determined to survive, the society’s ambitious committee recruits local teenage boys to replenish its ranks and begins a search for a new chorus master.

Their unlikely solution arrives in the form of Dr. Henry Guthrie, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes—a driven, exacting musician recently returned from Germany and carrying a past that unsettles the town. His arrival sets in motion a story shaped by suspicion, discipline, artistic ambition, and the quiet personal costs of war.

An acclaimed creative team behind the camera

The film is directed by Nicholas Hytner, whose background in theater brings a precise sense of performance and ensemble storytelling to the screen. The screenplay comes from Alan Bennett, now 91, whose body of work has long explored English identity, restraint, and the emotional lives that unfold beneath polite surfaces.

That literary pedigree informs The Choral’s tone, which blends intimate character studies with larger communal stakes. Critics have noted the film’s rich supporting cast, layered subplots, and its use of choral music as both emotional release and narrative engine.

A showcase of British craft and landscape

Shot against the sweeping backdrop of the Yorkshire countryside, the film balances visual grandeur with interior tension. Music plays a central role—not as ornament, but as a shared discipline that binds disparate generations during a moment of national fracture.

Reviewing the film, critic Rich Cline described it as a rousing period drama packed with colorful characters, moving subplots, glorious music, and spectacular scenery—an assessment that aligns with the Art Cinema’s tradition of spotlighting films that reward patience and attention.

Accessible screenings and full theatrical run

Several screenings of The Choral will feature open captions, with subtitles and sound descriptions visible on screen for all viewers:

  • Tuesday, January 13 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, January 15 at 8:00 p.m.

The film runs 113 minutes, is rated R, and is presented in English.

Daily showtimes are scheduled throughout the opening week and beyond, with early evening and later screenings available across multiple dates.

Another milestone for Coral Gables Art Cinema

The Art Cinema’s presentation of The Choral continues its pattern of securing exclusive regional premieres that might otherwise bypass South Florida. By pairing red-carpet events with extended runs, the theater reinforces its role as both a cultural venue and a gathering place for serious filmgoers.

With its blend of music, moral complexity, and historical reflection, The Choral arrives as a fitting centerpiece for the cinema’s January lineup—one that invites audiences to listen closely, both to the harmonies on screen and to the silences they surround.
