City hosts free community watch Party for UM–Indiana national championship

Coral Gables will turn Ponce Circle Park into a shared civic living room Monday evening as the City of Coral Gables, in partnership with The Plaza Coral Gables, hosts a free community watch party for the College Football Playoff National Championship game between the University of Miami Hurricanes and Indiana Hoosiers.

The event takes place Monday, Jan. 19, at Ponce Circle Park, with grounds opening at 5 p.m. and kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

A downtown gathering with a big-screen experience

At the center of the event is a large outdoor video screen provided and funded by The Plaza Coral Gables. Measuring approximately 22 x 16 feet, the screen anchors the viewing experience and allows fans to watch the championship game together in a park setting. The Plaza is also covering the broadcast rights for the game, making the event possible at no cost to attendees.

Restaurants at The Plaza will remain open throughout the evening, allowing spectators to move easily between the park and nearby dining options.

Family-friendly atmosphere and easy access

The watch party is designed as a family-friendly community event. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets to enjoy the game comfortably. Local vendors will be on site offering small bites for purchase, adding to the festival-style atmosphere.

Parking is available around Ponce Circle Park and in nearby city garages. City trolleys and the Freebee service will also be operating to help facilitate access to the event.

Comfort stations are being provided as an in-kind donation by Friendly John, supporting the logistics of a large public gathering.

A citywide show of support

Beyond the park, Coral Gables has embraced the moment as a show of civic pride. City Hall has been illuminated in orange and green throughout the week and will remain lit through Monday night in support of the hometown university. The Coral Gables Police Department has also placed electronic message signs at major intersections across the city displaying “Go Canes!” messages.

  1. Worried Resident

Lago talks about following Roberts Rules of Order and decorum, but he is the first to violate both. A meeting chair cannot unilaterally declare a recess. He needs a motion, a second and a vote. He is the First Violator of the meeting rules.

Lago’s PAC “Coral Gables First” sent a holiday message that sexualized a sitting commissioner with misogyny. That is a violation of any view of decorum and is also grounds for censure and voter recall. Lara, as the father of 3 young women, should have spoken out. And Anderson, the other woman on the dais and who would like to be our next mayor, should have decried that disgusting attack. Fernandez also missed an opportunity to show that we do not tolerate this behavior in our city.

Open your eyes Coral Gables! See Lago for who he really is. If we keep voting in his cronies, this is our future…degenerating into a banana republic of a city.
