Trumpeter, composer and rising jazz star Anthony Hervey brings his signature blend of virtuosity and soul to Coral Gables on Thursday, July 10, with a concert at Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ as part of the 2025 Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and promises a night of boundary-pushing jazz rooted in tradition yet brimming with contemporary spirit.

Hervey, recently named one of Grammy.com’s “10 Emerging Artists to Know,” arrives with the accolades of his generation and the approval of its legends. Wynton Marsalis, who has called him “a beautiful trumpet player of the first magnitude,” has tapped Hervey to substitute for him with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra—a testament to both technical command and musical maturity.

An artist on the rise

Hervey’s path has been remarkable. He was accepted to the Juilliard School at 18 and earned both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees there by 2020. Since then, he has toured and recorded with jazz luminaries including Christian McBride and Jon Batiste, and performed with some of the most revered ensembles on the scene: the Christian McBride Big Band, the Mingus Big Band, the Future of Jazz Orchestra, and the Ulysses Owens Jr. Generation Y Quintet.

From New York’s Blue Note and Birdland to international stages in Switzerland, Japan, and France, Hervey’s reputation has grown on the strength of his sound—warm, precise, and full of narrative. With his quintet, he presents original compositions that span Ragtime, Swing, R&B, and more, yet always circle back to jazz’s deepest roots in the blues.

Words from his horn

Hervey’s debut album, Words From My Horn, showcases his dual talents as trumpeter and composer. The recording blends the cerebral and the soulful, with tracks that feel at once spontaneous and carefully sculpted. In its best moments, it channels the emotional intelligence of Miles Davis with the narrative urgency of Charles Mingus. Through it all, Hervey’s horn acts as both storyteller and guide.

The album—and Hervey’s live performances—make clear that his music does more than entertain. It uplifts. Even when echoing loss or longing, it leans toward optimism. That thread of hope, woven through intricate arrangements and delivered with absolute control, sets Hervey apart as a jazz artist for this moment.

The sound of today—and tomorrow

While Hervey’s mastery of jazz vocabulary is evident, what makes his voice resonate is how he pushes that vocabulary forward. His playing moves between technical brilliance and emotional vulnerability, often within the same phrase. He is a modernist grounded in tradition, a player who honors the past while shaping what comes next.

In Coral Gables, he’ll perform with members of his quintet—musicians who share his commitment to exploration without excess. The result is a live experience that swings, soars, and stays with you.

More than a performance

Hervey’s Coral Gables appearance is more than a concert—it’s a homecoming of sorts for a musician whose sound reflects American diversity, grit, and grace. And for those who want to experience Hervey’s artistry beyond the stage, he will lead a free CAP Summer Master Class Jam Session the following morning, Friday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, also at Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ. The session is open to all—an opportunity for aspiring musicians and seasoned fans alike to engage with Hervey in a more personal, collaborative setting.

Where mastery meets momentum

The Community Arts Program’s decision to feature Anthony Hervey reflects a commitment to excellence, innovation, and the next generation of jazz leadership. This is not just a night of music—it’s a chance to witness a moment in a rising star’s career, to hear jazz’s past and future speaking through a single horn.

Tickets are available through the Community Arts Program website. Whether you’re a longtime jazz aficionado or simply seeking an evening of powerful live performance, Anthony Hervey’s concert is poised to be a standout moment in the summer’s cultural calendar. On July 10 in Coral Gables, the audience will hear exactly why.
