Prepare to be enchanted at the Coral Gables Branch Library this Saturday, August 16, with The Art of Magic: Stage/Grand Illusion, Parlor, Close-Up & Mentalism. Running from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., this free event combines curated video tributes with live performances that span the full spectrum of magic—from awe-inspiring spectacle to intimate feats of mentalism.
Masters of the craft—on screen and in person
The evening opens with a multimedia presentation featuring clips of legendary performers:
- David Copperfield, whose larger-than-life illusions—like walking through the Great Wall of China or erasing the Statue of Liberty—made stage magic a global phenomenon.
- Aldo Colombini, an Italian-born parlor magician known for his elegant sleight of hand and popular magic books, twice named Parlor Magician of the Year at Hollywood’s Magic Castle.
- Martin Lewis, a versatile close-up magician celebrated for practical stand-up routines like the cardiographic and sidewalk shuffle, staples in many magicians’ repertoires.
Following the visual feast, Alexander Beresford, a mentalism and psychic entertainer, will deliver live feats of mind-reading and connection. A respected figure in South Florida’s magic scene, he also serves as president of Ring 45 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians in Miami.
Next, Rick Alan brings close-up magic with a comedic twist—practical miracles that happen just inches from the audience’s eyes. The final highlight features Henry Bustamante, a rising star whose fresh energy and showmanship mark him as the “star of tomorrow.”
Magic’s appeal: from wonder to intimacy
Magic is timeless because it plays on our deepest impulses: surprise, curiosity, and the simple delight of the unknown. Stage-type illusions offer epic, dreamlike experiences, while parlor, close-up, and mentalism forms deliver personal, often startling moments of connection. From Robert-Houdin’s 19th-century parlor performances to today’s interactive shows, magic invites us to question reality and embrace wonder.

The Coral Gables Branch Library is a cultural hub. Known for marrying quiet study with vibrant programming, it hosts events ranging from poetry readings and film screenings to architectural lectures.
