Downtown Coral Gables begins its 2026 outdoor arts season on Jan. 15 with the return of Music at McBride Plaza, a free concert series that brings live performance into the daily rhythm of Miracle Mile. Presented every other Thursday from January through March, the series showcases ensembles from the University of Miami Frost School of Music, pairing emerging talent with an accessible, open-air setting at the heart of the city.

The opening concert features the Leah Rutherford Quartet, a jazz group led by vocalist Leah Rutherford, whose work blends classic repertoire with contemporary phrasing. The performance runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McBride Plaza, located at 150 Miracle Mile.

Jazz in the public square

Music at McBride Plaza has built a following by placing high-level musicianship in a casual civic space, inviting passersby, shoppers, and diners to pause and listen. The series treats the plaza not as a backdrop but as a gathering point, where music becomes part of the street’s natural flow.

That approach suits jazz especially well. The genre’s conversational structure and improvisational spirit translate easily to an outdoor environment, where audiences can engage at their own pace. Some listeners arrive with folding chairs and linger for the full set. Others catch a few tunes on their way to dinner. The result is a shared experience that feels both intentional and unforced.

A rising voice from the Frost School

Rutherford is a jazz vocal performance student at the Frost School of Music and has already earned national recognition through multiple DownBeat Awards and a YoungArts Winner with Distinction designation. Her work reflects a respect for tradition paired with a modern sensibility, emphasizing clarity of tone, rhythmic confidence, and expressive restraint.

The quartet brings together musicians whose interplay favors cohesion over showmanship. Accompanied by William Armstrong on keys, Ben Mini on bass, and Jeremy Baun on drums, the group focuses on balance and listening, allowing arrangements to unfold organically. That ensemble-first approach aligns with the series’ emphasis on musical craft rather than spectacle.

A winter arts tradition takes shape

Running through March, Music at McBride Plaza offers a consistent cadence to the downtown calendar during peak season. Each concert introduces a different Frost School ensemble, giving audiences a window into the breadth of the university’s music programs while reinforcing Coral Gables’ identity as a city where the arts occupy public space.

The timing, early evening on alternating Thursdays, makes the series easy to integrate into weekday routines. Families, office workers, and visitors converge on the plaza, creating an atmosphere that feels social without being crowded.

What to know before you go

The Jan. 15 concert is free and open to the public. Seating is informal, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or enjoy the performance while standing or strolling nearby. The plaza sits amid restaurants and shops, making it easy to combine the concert with dinner or an early evening walk along Miracle Mile.
