EDITOR: On civility, accountability and the limits of commentary

A word bubble.
Elected officials and their actions in public office are fair game for criticism, scrutiny, and vigorous debate. Their families are not.

The Coral Gables Gazette welcomes robust, thoughtful discussion on the issues that shape our city. Public debate and differing viewpoints are essential to a healthy civic culture.

Elected officials and their actions in public office are fair game for criticism, scrutiny, and vigorous debate. That scrutiny is a core function of a free press and an engaged community.

That said, the Gazette will remove any reader comment that references, targets, or alludes to family members of elected officials or public figures. These individuals are not participants in public decision-making and should not be drawn into political or civic disputes.

This policy applies uniformly and without regard to viewpoint. Our goal is to keep the focus on ideas, conduct, and accountability in public life—while maintaining basic standards of decency and respect.

We appreciate our readers’ engagement and cooperation in helping sustain a constructive forum for community dialogue.
