Books & Books will host spiritual teacher Aaron Abke on Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m., inviting readers to explore the ideas behind his new release, The Three Beliefs of Ego: A Sufferer’s Guide to Freedom (New World Library, $19.95). The event, held at the iconic Coral Gables bookstore at 265 Aragon Ave., includes a talk, audience Q&A, and a signed copy of the book with each ticket.
Abke’s debut centers on a provocative premise: that much of human suffering can be traced to three unconscious beliefs — lack, attachment, and control. By identifying and softening these assumptions, he argues, people can live with greater ease and authenticity. The book draws on Abke’s experience in both Christian theology and nondual spiritual traditions, weaving together Eastern and Western insights.
Mapping the ego’s hidden architecture
In The Three Beliefs of Ego, Abke reframes the ego not as an enemy but as a set of learned ideas quietly shaping perception. According to his model, the sense of “lack” fosters feelings of inadequacy, “attachment” ties peace of mind to external conditions, and “control” fuels anxiety about outcomes.
At the heart of the book is what Abke calls the Emotional Guidance System, a tool for recognizing these patterns in daily life. Through practical exercises and reflective prompts, he invites readers to watch their inner dialogue with curiosity rather than judgment, allowing unhelpful scripts to dissolve.
Abke’s approach balances philosophy with hands-on guidance, making concepts from contemplative traditions accessible to modern audiences. “The ego is not something to conquer,” he writes. “It’s a misunderstanding to be seen through.”

Why This Conversation Resonates Now
Abke’s message arrives at a time when many are rethinking the pressures of achievement and identity. By questioning the beliefs that tether happiness to external success, his work speaks to readers navigating stress, social media comparison, or burnout. It also intersects with broader trends in psychology and mindfulness, where curiosity and acceptance are replacing older models of self-improvement.
For Coral Gables, the event reflects the city’s tradition of hosting authors who bridge ideas across cultures and disciplines. Books & Books has long championed titles that mix intellectual rigor with practical guidance, making it a fitting stage for Abke’s synthesis of theology, philosophy, and modern coaching.
