Families looking for a playful blend of hands-on creativity and classic cinema can find it at Coral Gables Art Cinema this Sunday, August 10, during a special Family Day Summer Art Workshop. The morning kicks off with a pressed flower hat-making session, followed by a screening of the 1955 comic gem The Court Jester, starring the legendary Danny Kaye.

Jester hat postcards with artist Anyi Botteri

From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., attendees of all ages are invited to step into the colorful world of nature-inspired creativity. Led by local artist and artisan Anyi Botteri, founder of Ayni, the workshop introduces participants to the botanical press technique, a timeless and meditative art form that preserves the fleeting beauty of flowers.

Botteri will guide the group in creating whimsical Jester Hat Postcards using real pressed flowers—an imaginative nod to the film that follows. The project merges tactile fun with quiet reflection, giving families a meaningful way to engage with nature while fostering creative expression. No experience or supplies are necessary—just bring a sense of fun and curiosity.

The workshop is designed to be accessible to all skill levels and is ideal for children and adults alike. Tickets are required for all participants and include admission for two to the film screening that follows. Early reservations are encouraged, as space is limited.

“The Court Jester”: A comic classic for all generations

At 11:00 a.m., the laughter begins. The Court Jester is a swashbuckling farce filled with mistaken identities, palace intrigue, and dazzling wordplay. Danny Kaye stars as Hawkins, a gentle entertainer tasked with infiltrating a royal court by impersonating the infamous jester Giacomo.

The film features an ensemble cast including Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone, and Angela Lansbury, and boasts one of the most famous tongue-twisters in cinematic history: “The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle…”

Directed by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, The Court Jester has become a cult favorite thanks to its clever writing, musical interludes, and Kaye’s singular performance. Its mix of slapstick and satire remains fresh even nearly 70 years after its release. The screening provides a rare opportunity to introduce a new generation to one of Hollywood’s most joyful comedies—on the big screen, where it belongs.

A community collaboration for the arts

This Family Day event is part of the Family Day on Aragon series, a monthly partnership between Coral Gables Art Cinema, Books & Books, and the Coral Gables Museum. Together, these institutions offer a curated program of free or low-cost activities designed to engage children, parents, and caregivers in the cultural life of the city.

August’s offering, with its focus on both botanical art and classic film, exemplifies the spirit of the series: thoughtful, inclusive, and rich in both imagination and community value. Previous editions have included author readings, hands-on museum activities, and interactive storytelling, each one encouraging families to explore the arts in Coral Gables.

Celebrate your creativity

The August 10 Family Day is a two-part celebration of nature, imagination, and shared laughter. With a morning of creativity and an afternoon of comedy, it offers a well-rounded cultural experience in one of the city’s most cherished venues.

Tickets for the pressed flower workshop are available through Coral Gables Art Cinema and include admission to the film for two people. Whether you’re crafting a floral keepsake or introducing your children to the magic of Danny Kaye, this event promises connection, joy, and inspiration.

Bring your kids, bring your creativity, and spend the day where jesters wear flowers and laughter reigns supreme.
