Coral Gables’ beloved independent bookstore Books & Books will transform into a portal of the paranormal on the evening of Wednesday, June 25 as acclaimed graphic novelist Dan Goldman visits to discuss his latest work, Red Light Properties: Unfinished Business. The free event, which runs from 7 to 8 p.m., promises a fascinating journey into the haunted underbelly of South Florida real estate—and the creative mind behind it.

Known for pushing the boundaries of graphic storytelling, Goldman has written and illustrated works that blend political commentary, cultural critique, and supernatural thrillers. His newest release is no exception. Red Light Properties isn’t just a ghost story—it’s a surreal, genre-blurring commentary on the American dream, late-stage capitalism, and the often-fraught terrain of family and small business.

The novel introduces readers to Jude and Cecilia, an ex-couple who run Red Light Properties, a niche realty firm specializing in “previously-haunted” homes. Cecilia is the capable, overworked face of the company. Jude, her ex-husband, is an eccentric exorcist who can only perform his duties under the influence of psychedelic drugs. Their uneasy partnership is tested with every new listing as they balance spectral encounters, spiraling finances, and emotional baggage.

“It’s a slow-burn funhouse mirror critique of reptile-brain late-stage American capitalism,” Goldman writes, describing the book’s dark humor and chaotic charm.

Set in a South Florida landscape equal parts sunshine and shadow, the book delivers a psychedelic fever dream of a narrative—equal parts horror and satire, wrapped in lush, immersive artwork. The story uses ghosts not just as plot devices, but as metaphors for the baggage—emotional, financial, historical—that haunts modern life.

Goldman is no stranger to unconventional formats and bold themes. His previous work includes Chasing Echoes, Shooting War (nominated for an Eisner Award), and the United Nations-honored Priya’s Shakti series, which tackled gender-based violence through Indian mythology and augmented reality. He has also contributed to major video game franchises like The Walking Dead, The Division, and Silent Hill: Ascension, earning an Emmy for his work in interactive storytelling.

Born in New York and now based in South Florida, Goldman brings a regional authenticity to Red Light Properties, making it especially resonant for Miami-area readers. His deep understanding of the city’s spiritual and cultural layers—particularly its Caribbean influences and history of Santería—adds richness to the novel’s supernatural elements.

Books & Books, a cornerstone of Coral Gables’ literary community for decades, is the ideal setting for this evening of insight, humor, and eerie storytelling. The event is free, and seating is first-come, first-served. Goldman will speak about his creative process, the origins of the book, and how his personal experiences shaped its themes. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the hardcover release and have it signed.

While the book’s subject matter may include ghosts and ghouls, it’s the very real human dynamics—divorce, disillusionment, and dreams deferred—that give Red Light Properties its power. And it’s Goldman’s singular voice—sharp, compassionate, and unafraid to trip the wire of the bizarre—that keeps the reader turning pages.

Whether you’re a longtime comics fan, a budding graphic novelist, or just looking for an entertaining evening out, this event is more than a book talk. It’s a chance to explore how visual storytelling can tackle the most haunting questions of our time—and do it with style.
