Coral Gables will host one of contemporary fantasy literature’s most visible voices on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when bestselling author Alex Aster appears for CROWNTIDE, an evening of conversation celebrating the release of the fourth novel in her Lightlark Saga. The event takes place at 7 p.m. at the Coral Gables Congregational Church and is presented by Books & Books.

The appearance marks a rare in-person opportunity for South Florida readers to engage directly with a literary series that has grown into a global phenomenon. With more than three million copies sold worldwide, the “Lightlark Saga” has moved beyond traditional publishing success into a cross-platform cultural presence fueled by social media, fan communities, and international readership.

The world of ‘Lightlark’ expands

“CROWNTIDE” continues the story of Isla Crown, a ruler navigating the consequences of power, legacy, and choice. In this fourth installment, Isla ventures into Skyshade, an unfamiliar realm shaped by danger and moral ambiguity, as she confronts her ancestor Lark and the cost of rewriting destiny. Parallel storylines follow Grim and Oro as they face the possibility of alliance after long histories of betrayal, underscoring the series’ recurring themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and reconciliation.

The “Lightlark Saga” has been widely recognized for blending high-stakes fantasy with romance, political intrigue, and emotional consequence. Its appeal spans young adult and crossover adult audiences, particularly readers drawn to complex heroines and world-building that balances spectacle with interior struggle.

Aster’s rise as a literary force

Aster has emerged as one of the most influential fantasy authors of her generation. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied creative writing, Aster has achieved bestseller status across multiple lists, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly. In addition to the “Lightlark Saga,” her body of work includes the Emblem Island series and the standalone novel “Summer in the City.”

Aster’s reach extends well beyond print. She is among the most followed novelists on social media, where she has cultivated a devoted readership through direct engagement, behind-the-scenes insight into her writing process, and sustained interaction with the global BookTok community. That visibility has helped redefine how fantasy authors connect with audiences, particularly younger readers discovering books through digital platforms.

A conversation with Romina Garber

Moderating the evening is Romina Garber, herself a bestselling author with deep local ties. Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Miami, Garber began her writing career as a teenager with a nationally syndicated column for the Miami Herald. She is a graduate of Harvard College and the author of multiple acclaimed fantasy novels, including Lobizona, Cazadora, Castle of the Cursed, and the ZODIAC quartet.

The pairing brings together two authors who operate at the intersection of genre storytelling and cultural conversation. Their dialogue is expected to explore craft, character development, the pressures of serial storytelling, and the evolving relationship between authors and their readerships in the digital age.

A literary event with local resonance

Hosted at the Coral Gables Congregational Church on De Soto Boulevard, the event reflects the city’s growing role as a venue for nationally significant literary programming. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the conversation beginning at 7 p.m. The event is open to all ages, includes free parking, and is presented in person only.

For fans of fantasy literature, BookTok culture, or contemporary storytelling more broadly, CROWNTIDE offers both access and insight. It positions Coral Gables not just as a stop on a book tour, but as a setting for meaningful literary exchange between authors shaping the current moment in genre fiction.
