In two weeks, José “Joe” Gómez will take over as Coral Gables interim city manager. Gomez will replace Alberto Parjus who replaced Amos Rojas who replaced Peter Iglesias – all in the last 15 months.
Gómez was named assistant city manager for operations and infrastructure on July 15, 2024, and promoted to deputy city manager in February. In this role, he oversees the city’s infrastructure projects and manages the Development Services, Parking and Mobility Services, and Public Works departments.
Gómez has extensive experience in engineering and municipal government operations, most recently serving as director of public works for the City of Miami Beach. In this role, he led a team of 360 employees across four divisions and managed a $600 million capital and operating budget.
In his more than 47 years as a civil engineer, he has worked in municipal infrastructure, strategic planning, and construction management. His career includes leadership roles in both the public and private sectors, including 10 years with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
He is an alumnus of Miami Dade College and Florida International University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. A registered professional engineer since 1985, Gómez holds certifications in Advanced Maintenance of Traffic and Quality Control Management from FDOT, as well as Stormwater Inspection from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Miami and is a member of the university’s Civil and Architectural Engineering Industrial Advisory Board.

Can not think of anybody more qualified than Mr. Gomez. Hope he is there to stay long term!
Good to have an engineer to run the city, at least on an interim basis. Engineers get things done. Politicians talk.
