The Coral Gables Gazette is committed to providing accurate, fair and responsible local journalism. When we publish an error, we believe in correcting it clearly and promptly.

Corrections and Clarifications

If the Gazette determines that a published story contains a factual error, we may publish a correction, clarification or update. Corrections are made when information is materially inaccurate or misleading and the available information supports making a change. Minor typographical, grammatical or formatting errors that do not affect the meaning of a story may be corrected without a formal correction notice. When appropriate, a correction may be added to the original story so readers can see what was changed. The Gazette may also update headlines, photographs, captions or other elements when necessary to improve accuracy or clarity.

Updates

News stories can develop after publication. When significant new information becomes available, the Gazette may update an article and indicate that the story has been updated. An update is not necessarily a correction. An update may provide additional information, context, statements from individuals or organizations, or developments that occurred after the original publication.

Reader Requests

Readers who believe a story contains a factual error are encouraged to contact the Gazette. Please identify the specific statement in question and provide information or documentation supporting the requested correction. Correction requests may be reviewed by the Gazette’s editorial staff. A request for a correction does not guarantee that a story will be changed. The Gazette does not alter accurate reporting simply because a person or organization disagrees with the story, its characterization of events, its inclusion of information that is legitimately newsworthy, or the opinions expressed by sources or contributors.

City Hall Confidential

City Hall Confidential is a separate commentary and gossip feature and may contain rumors, allegations, speculation, opinion, observations and information supplied by third parties. Material published in City Hall Confidential should not automatically be interpreted as independently verified news reporting. Individuals or organizations mentioned in City Hall Confidential may contact the Gazette regarding factual errors or material inaccuracies. The Gazette may, at its editorial discretion, update, clarify, annotate or remove material when warranted.

Corrections to Public Records and Statements

The Gazette may rely on public records, government documents, court filings, official statements and information provided by sources when reporting the news. If a source document or official record is subsequently determined to contain an error, the Gazette may update its reporting when appropriate.

Likewise, a correction may not be warranted simply because a person later disputes an accurate account or provides a different interpretation of events.

How to Request a Correction

Correction requests should include:

• The headline or title of the story
• The specific statement believed to be inaccurate
• An explanation of the alleged error
• Supporting documentation or other reliable information, when available
• Contact information so the Gazette can follow up

The Gazette reserves editorial discretion over whether and how a correction, clarification or update is published.

The goal of our corrections policy is simple: when we get the facts wrong, we will correct them. When additional information changes the story, we will update it. And when a disagreement is a matter of interpretation, opinion or legitimate editorial judgment, we may leave the original reporting unchanged.
