Five of the original Broadway stars of Hadestown are heading to Coral Gables this week — in a live-performance film that brings the Tony-winning musical’s journey to the underworld to the big screen.
Hadestown: The Musical opens Friday, Aug. 14, at Coral Gables Art Cinema for a weeklong run. The film reunites Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada, Patrick Page, Amber Gray and André De Shields, the five principal performers from the original Broadway cast, alongside members of the show’s West End company in a performance captured in London.
The 142-minute film gives audiences a close-up version of the stage production that won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, and whose Broadway cast recording won the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Two love stories lead to the underworld
Written by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and directed for the stage by Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown intertwines two Greek myths: the doomed romance of Orpheus and Eurydice and the troubled marriage of Hades and Persephone.
Mitchell places those ancient stories in an industrial underworld and tells them through music drawing heavily on American folk and New Orleans-inspired jazz. Eurydice, struggling with poverty and insecurity, is drawn into Hadestown by Hades. Orpheus, a young musician determined to retrieve her, follows her below.
The production opened at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre in March 2019 after earlier incarnations off-Broadway and in Canada and London. It received 14 Tony nominations, the most of any production that year, and won eight, including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical for Chavkin.
The show has since toured the United States and mounted productions in London, South Korea, Australia and the Netherlands.
Five original Broadway stars reunite
The film’s principal attraction for longtime fans is its cast.
Carney returns as Orpheus, Noblezada as Eurydice, Page as Hades, Gray as Persephone and De Shields as Hermes. The five performers reunited six years after appearing together in the original Broadway company, supported by members of the West End cast.
Brett Sullivan directed the performance for the screen, while Chavkin is credited as director of the stage production. Mitchell wrote the music, lyrics and book.
The film had its world premiere at the 2026 Tribeca Festival before entering North American theatrical release through Crosswalk, a division of Bleecker Street. Its theatrical run, initially presented as a limited engagement, has since been extended by popular demand.
Six days of screenings, including two with open captions
Coral Gables Art Cinema will show Hadestown on six days between Aug. 14 and 20.
The schedule is:
- Friday, Aug. 14: 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
- Saturday, Aug. 15: 1:45 p.m.
- Sunday, Aug. 16: 3:30 p.m.
- Monday, Aug. 17: 5 p.m.
- Wednesday, Aug. 19: 5 p.m.
- Thursday, Aug. 20: 7:30 p.m.
The Sunday and Thursday screenings will include open captions.
The film runs 142 minutes, is not rated and will be presented in DCP format.
Stage performances have a home on the cinema screen
The booking fits an established part of the Coral Gables Art Cinema program. The nonprofit regularly presents filmed performance through offerings including National Theatre Live and Exhibition on Screen, alongside independent films, repertory titles and special presentations.
The cinema opened in October 2010 and is operated by the nonprofit Coral Gables Cinematheque, which was formed in 2006 to develop and run the theater.
Its auditorium seats 141 and is equipped to screen digital cinema as well as 35mm and 70mm film.
For Hadestown, however, the draw is not the format so much as the opportunity to see a celebrated stage production preserved with much of the cast that first made it a Broadway hit.
