Miro backs Lara in runoff

Claudia Miro, who placed third in the April 8 general election for the Coral Gables City Commission, Group III seat, has endorsed Richard Lara and is encouraging her supporters to cast their votes for him ahead of the April 22 runoff.

Miro’s endorsement marks a notable development in the closely watched race between Lara and Tom Wells, a local attorney. Miro emphasized the need for elected officials who prioritize trust and accountability in city governance.

“Richard is the right person to help lead the Coral Gables Commission into the future,” Miro said. “It’s time to turn the page on the last two years of unnecessary salary increases and decisions that ignored the will of the people—like denying residents the opportunity to vote on having an independent inspector general in our city. Richard will bring back the focus on residents and real solutions that our city desperately needs.”

For his part Lara was ecstatic to receive his former opponent’s endorsement to add to one he has already received from Mayor Vince Lago.

“I’m incredibly honored to have Claudia’s support,” said Lara. “She ran a campaign rooted in integrity, transparency and putting the residents of Coral Gables first. Her endorsement means a great deal to me, to the voters who supported her, and to the many residents who believe it’s time for a new chapter of leadership in our city.”

Wells was not concerned with Miro’s endorsement, saying he and she share many similar positions that will resonate with Miro supporters – independence, traffic safety and over development. “A vote for Miro is still a vote against Lara. More people voted against Lago’s proxy than against Lago,” explained Wells. “If Lara was a good candidate, he would have gotten as many votes as Lago. Lara has issues with transparency as to where he has lived (Westchester from 2003 to 2021), his service to the city (attended only one meeting of the Anti-Crime Committee in September 2021 before it was terminated in September 2022 for doing no business) and not voting in local elections for the last 25 years (before this one). And compared to my record of service, it is poor.”

No surprise here. Miro is on the Lago bandwagon, regardless of what she says.
Can’t change the facts (as Tom Wells points out) that Lara has contributed nothing to the city of Coral Gables, hasn’t served the city in any capacity, has misrepresented his years of residency, and worst of all, hadn’t voted in our city elections since 1999.
    He’s high on misrepresentation.
An empty suit, no substance. Talks a good game but there is nothing behind it.
