Coral Gables Code Enforcement Board to weigh range of violations

The Coral Gables Code Enforcement Board will convene Wednesday, May 21, at 8:30 a.m. in the Commission Chambers at City Hall to hear a full slate of new, continued, and status cases involving violations ranging from unauthorized construction to improper tree pruning.

At least 18 new cases are on the docket, many related to property owners performing significant alterations or additions without the required permits. These include unpermitted roof repairs at 145 Madeira Ave., gas generator installation at 1411 Pizarro St., and major landscape changes—such as artificial turf and fencing—at properties on Red Road and Tahiti Beach Island Road. Violators are being directed to obtain after-the-fact permits or face penalties under the Florida Building Code.

Tree-related violations are also drawing scrutiny. At 1240 San Remo Ave., a property owner is cited for improperly pruning a tree on public property without the required permission from the city’s Tree Preservation Agency. A separate case at 1071 San Pedro Ave. alleges “tree abuse” of a live oak, which may have rendered the tree nonviable. Both cases require arborist assessments and compliance with city ordinances.

In some cases, aesthetic or zoning violations are the issue. At 6946 Sunrise Ct., a statue was installed without proper zoning approval. At 36 Antilla Ave., a commercial property is cited for exterior deterioration, including dirty planters and damaged pavement.

Two cases involve expired building permits for pool projects—one dating back to 2014—requiring reactivation and final inspections before compliance can be confirmed.

Historic preservation also comes into play in at least one status case: A property with historic designation at 6710 Le Jeune Road was cited for window installation without proper permits or historical review.

Wednesday’s meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast live on Coral Gables TV (Channel 77). For those wishing to participate virtually, the city has provided a Zoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82004327867.
