Miami Art Week reaches into the City Beautiful this Friday, December 5 as the Coral Gables Museum unveils Backyard Basel, a special edition of its monthly Gallery Night that expands the district’s role in the region’s most celebrated week of art. For one evening, Downtown Coral Gables becomes an open-air art corridor, blending gallery openings, local markets, live music, and a museum-level cultural showcase into a single walkable experience.

The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, December 5, and is expected to draw visitors who want an Art Basel–inspired night without battling beach traffic or Wynwood’s crowds. Backyard Basel sits at the center of this month’s Gallery Night, which includes extended hours at neighborhood galleries and the return of Giralda Live, the city’s alfresco music and dining block party on Giralda Plaza.

Art Basel style, Gables vibe

Backyard Basel is produced by the Coral Gables Museum with its Young Associates group and the Business Improvement District of Downtown Coral Gables. Together they have crafted an event that mirrors the excitement of Miami Art Week while keeping the intimate scale and neighborhood charm that define Gallery Night.

The outdoor art fair offers work by local artists priced from $50 to $5,000, encouraging both new collectors and seasoned buyers to explore. Live music by Mama Fuma, food from nearby restaurants, and a beer station by Prison Pals Brewing Co. line the museum’s streetfront. The intention is clear: create a cultural street festival that feels festive, accessible, and distinctly Coral Gables.

Visitors seeking a deeper experience can opt for the VIP Collectors’ Lounge inside the Museum. The lounge features large-scale installations, artist meet-and-greets, and chef-driven bites from Zitz Sum, Kojin, and Dojo Izakaya. Unseen Creatures Brewing and Blending provides craft beer, while Happy Wine Calle Ocho hosts a prosecco bar.

New exhibit anchors the museum’s winter season

The Museum’s Celia Cruz centennial exhibition, Happy 100th Birthday, Celia!, is already open and will remain on view through February 22, 2026. Presented in partnership with the Celia Cruz Foundation, the show features intimate portraits by Alexis Rodríguez-Duarte and Tico Torres. Its presence deepens the cultural moment around Backyard Basel, giving attendees a chance to combine Art Week–inspired programming outdoors with a fully realized museum exhibition indoors.

Gables galleries extend their hours

Gallery Night retains a districtwide footprint, and several venues will take part:

As always, the city encourages visitors to use the Coral Gables Trolley or Freebee on-demand vehicles to move among galleries.

Giralda Live adds music, dining and holiday spirit

December’s Gallery Night also includes Giralda Live, the city’s monthly evening of music and dining on Giralda Plaza. The pedestrian street becomes a holiday-season stage from 7 to 11 p.m., with live music from 8 to 10 p.m. Visitors can explore vendor booths, enjoy local artists, and take advantage of alfresco dining at restaurants along the plaza.

This month’s headliner is Pamir and La Pachanguisima, returning with a high-energy Latin fusion performance that anchors the main stage. Holiday decorations, including a lit Christmas tree and a festive sleigh photo station, add seasonal atmosphere. A digital photo booth will operate throughout the evening, and The Bar continues the celebration late into the night.

A unified evening

Friday’s combined programming positions Gallery Night as a single, districtwide experience rather than a series of isolated stops. Backyard Basel supplies the Miami Art Week connection. Giralda Live offers the social, musical, and culinary centerpiece. The galleries provide the artistic throughline. Together they create an evening that moves easily from street-level discovery to museum-caliber exhibitions.

For residents who want to experience Art Week without leaving Coral Gables, this month’s Gallery Night makes a clear statement: the city has its own creative identity, its own audience, and its own rhythm. Backyard Basel amplifies those assets by showing how local artists, institutions, and businesses can collaborate to bring major-week energy west of Biscayne Bay.
