Actors’ Playhouse revives ‘Man of La Mancha’ for 30th anniversary

Actors’ Playhouse will return to one of the defining touchstones of its artistic identity this month when it opens a newly staged Man of La Mancha—a production that marks its 30th Anniversary at the Miracle Theatre and revisits the musical that launched the company’s first season in Kendall in 1988 and christened its Miracle Mile home in 1995. The revival begins previews on Wednesday, Nov. 19 and runs through Dec. 21 in the Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Center for the Performing Arts, bringing the company back to a work that has framed two of its most formative eras.

The anniversary staging carries particular resonance for audiences who have followed the theater’s evolution across nearly four decades. Man of La Mancha was the first musical Actors’ Playhouse produced at its original Kendall space and the first it presented when it reopened the restored Miracle Theatre. Its return in 2025 extends a lineage that mirrors the company’s own history and preserves the connection between past ambition, present identity and Coral Gables’ broader cultural landscape.

Revival ties past and present together

The return to Man of La Mancha underscores how certain productions can anchor a theater company’s artistic memory. Written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, the musical remains one of the most enduring titles of the 20th-century stage. Its framing device—a jailed Miguel de Cervantes staging a “play within a play” during the Spanish Inquisition—allows the story to move between history, imagination, and theater itself.

Its score, built around Spanish-inflected melodies and the iconic “The Impossible Dream,” has sustained the musical’s appeal for generations. For Actors’ Playhouse, the work has served as a statement of ambition at the start of each major chapter in its life. Its revival in the 30th anniversary in the Miracle Theatre season both honors that history and signals the company’s continued commitment to producing classic musical theater at a professional scale.

This staging, directed by longtime Artistic Director David Arisco, represents the third time the company has returned to this title under his leadership. Arisco, now in his 38th season, brings an accumulated perspective shaped by decades of institutional continuity and artistic collaboration. His creative team includes Music Director Bruce Barnes, Associate Director/Choreographer Henry Gainza, Scenic Designer K. April Soroko, Lighting Designer Eric Nelson, Costume Designer Ellis Tillman, and Sound Designer Reidar Sorensen, whose combined work helps frame the production within the theater’s scale.

Cast connects regional talent with national experience

The revival features a cast of local and nationally experienced performers, many of whom share longstanding ties to Actors’ Playhouse. Leading the company is E.L. Losada as Miguel de Cervantes/Don Quixote, a Cuban-born actor who traces his earliest professional work to the Miracle Theatre. His return adds another layer to the production’s sense of continuity, linking past and present through both material and performer.

Gaby Tortoledo appears as Aldonza following recent work in The Girl on the Train, and Jose Luaces joins as Sancho Panza with credits that include A Christmas Story: The Musical on Broadway and multiple productions at Actors’ Playhouse. Their combined experience contributes to the ensemble-driven nature of Man of La Mancha, a musical in which character detail and vocal narrative shape the dramatic movement as much as plot.

The cast also includes Paul Louis-Gonzalez, Henry Gainza, Michael Focas, Lauren Horgan, Joline Mujica, Michael Hunsaker, and other returning artists, creating a company anchored in both regional familiarity and broad theatrical experience.

Creative design supports a story built on imagination

The production’s creative design aligns with the musical’s themes of transformation and imagination. Soroko’s set design must create a single space that functions as a prison, a stage, and the shifting inner world of Cervantes’ narrative. Nelson’s lighting and Tillman’s costumes reinforce the transition between the real and imagined as characters move between the framework of the Inquisition and the expansive vision of Don Quixote’s quest.

Because Man of La Mancha is a musical driven more by character and poetry than by spectacle, the design must underscore the work’s emotional landscape without overshadowing it. That challenge aligns with the theater’s long practice of balancing large-scale musical storytelling with the architectural intimacy of the Miracle Theatre.

Musical marked every major chapter in the Playhouse’s history

Reviving the musical in the 30th anniversary season carries both symbolic and practical meaning. The company has built its regional presence through a mix of contemporary titles, children’s theater, education programs, and large-scale musicals, and Man of La Mancha remains one of the works that most clearly encapsulates its identity.

By returning to a production that shaped two foundational moments—in 1988 and 1995—the theater acknowledges how its artistic history has contributed to its present standing as one of Miami-Dade County’s major cultural institutions.

This framing also aligns with the theater’s positioning as a downtown Coral Gables anchor. Miracle Mile’s ongoing evolution has placed increased importance on cultural institutions as drivers of nighttime activity, and a recognizable title like Man of La Mancha extends that civic value.

Production schedule designed to draw diverse audiences

The run includes preview performances on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 19 and 20; an official opening on Friday, Nov. 21; and a final performance on Dec. 21. Evening shows run Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. A special weekday matinee will be held Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices range from $40 to $100, with weekday senior discounts and $15 student rush tickets available shortly before curtain. Group bookings are offered through the theater’s box office.

The decision to return to Man of La Mancha signals a season grounded in both legacy and renewal. It reflects an understanding that anniversary seasons benefit from productions that connect audiences to the company’s history, while also demonstrating how classic works can gain new resonance with each decade.
