Accordion virtuoso Hanzhi Wang returns to Mainly Mozart Festival

Internationally acclaimed accordionist Hanzhi Wang will perform on Thursday, May 22 at 8 p.m. at the Sanctuary of the Arts in Coral Gables.

The 2025 Mainly Mozart Festival continues its celebration of musical mastery with a captivating solo recital by internationally acclaimed accordionist Hanzhi Wang on Thursday, May 22 at 8 p.m. at the Sanctuary of the Arts in Coral Gables.

Titled Reflections and Horizons, Wang’s program explores the full expressive range of the accordion—an instrument more often associated with folk traditions than the concert stage. But in Wang’s hands, it becomes something entirely different: “a keyboard of astonishing nuance,” as The New York Times put it in praise of her “staggering virtuosity and soulful musicianship.”

Journey through sound, time

The recital opens with a reverent nod to the classical past, including Baroque sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti and selections from J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, interwoven with the spiritual stillness of his chorales. Wang’s interpretations promise clarity, elegance, and emotion rarely heard on this instrument.

In the second half, the performance takes a more contemporary turn, highlighting the accordion’s versatility. The program includes Wang’s own original compositions, seasonal miniatures by Danish composer Martin Lohse, and a fiery set of works by Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine master of tango nuevo.

Together, the selections trace a musical arc that bridges centuries and continents, weaving together sacred reflection and bold, modern rhythm.
