Cyclists will take to the streets of Coral Gables on Sunday, July 19, for a guided bike tour marking America’s 250th anniversary through local sites tied to the city’s civic identity and leadership.
The ride, led by Elvis Fuentes, executive director of the Coral Gables Museum, is presented by Bike Walk Coral Gables in partnership with the museum and Dade Heritage Trust. It begins at 10 a.m. at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave., and runs until 1 p.m.
The tour is part of the Gables Bike Tours series, a monthly program that uses cycling to explore Coral Gables history, architecture, public spaces and neighborhoods. This installment connects the national Semiquincentennial — 250 years since the Declaration of Independence — to the city’s own history of public leadership, civic design and local identity.
A local ride for a national milestone
Rather than retracing Revolutionary War history, the tour turns closer to home. Organizers describe the July ride as a visit to local sites that commemorate the patriotic spirit of Coral Gables and its leaders, past and present.
That gives the ride a different focus from a typical architectural tour. Coral Gables was built around a founder’s vision of civic beauty, from George Merrick’s city plan to the Mediterranean Revival buildings, plazas and public spaces that still define its streets. This tour uses the country’s 250th anniversary as a frame for looking at how one city has expressed patriotism through planning, public service and civic memory.
Fuentes, who has led the Coral Gables Museum since 2022, has emphasized what he calls the civic arts — architecture, urban design, public art and public space as reflections of community values. That lens fits a bike tour built less around a single landmark than around the broader question of how Coral Gables presents its history and ideals.
Part of a monthly bike-tour series
The July ride is part of the Gables Bike Tours program, held on the third Sunday of most months. The series is organized by Bike Walk Coral Gables with the Coral Gables Museum and has covered subjects ranging from historic homes and Coral Gables’ gateways to the Biltmore Hotel, George Merrick’s fountains and the city’s tree canopy.
The Dade Heritage Trust’s involvement adds a countywide preservation perspective. The nonprofit has partnered on past rides that connect Coral Gables landmarks to the broader history of Miami-Dade County.
Details, tickets and requirements
The tour departs from the Coral Gables Museum at 285 Aragon Ave. Riders should bring their own bicycles in good working condition. Helmets are required for children under 16 and encouraged for all riders.
Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for Coral Gables Museum members and children under 12. Museum admission is included after the ride.
The ride is designed to be family-friendly and paced for a range of cycling experience levels, with Bike Walk Coral Gables volunteers helping guide the group.
