The historic Venetian Pool in Coral Gables remains closed to the public as city-led renovations continue, with the latest phase focused on repairing infrastructure and restoring key architectural features of the nearly century-old facility.
Originally scheduled to reopen this month, the timeline has shifted due to structural complexities uncovered during initial construction work, according to city officials. No new completion date has been formally announced, but Public Works staff said efforts remain underway to finish the $2 million project “as quickly and safely as possible.”
The Venetian Pool, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1923 from a coral rock quarry and has long been a centerpiece of Coral Gables’ civic identity. With its signature loggias, grottos and Mediterranean-style design, it attracts thousands of residents and tourists each year.
The current round of upgrades includes resurfacing the pool basin, repairing deteriorated walkways, improving plumbing and electrical systems, and reinforcing support structures around the waterfalls and signature rock formations. Preservation specialists are also overseeing restoration of original design elements to meet historical guidelines.

It is a shame that the City continues to close the pool every winter, but this year is really the longest closure in a while. People come from all over to visit Venetian Pool. Many tourists (who come in the winter) find it extremely disappointing to show up at Venetian Pool and find it closed.
The closure makes it very difficult for the Venetian Aquatic Club to offer their swimming lessons to the children who are on vacation in the summer. These renovations should have been planned more precisely so the pool would be open when school gets out.
