Coral Gables Chamber President, Mark A. Trowbridge, dies at 56

Mark A. Trowbridge, the esteemed President and CEO of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and longtime friend of the Coral Gables Gazette, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the age of 56. His death resulted from heart complications following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Known affectionately as “Mister Coral Gables,” Trowbridge dedicated nearly two decades to the Chamber, significantly enhancing its influence and fostering community growth. Under his leadership, the Chamber’s revenue increased by over 40%, and he spearheaded popular events like Burgerliscious and championed initiatives such as Small Business Saturday, which supported local businesses.

Beyond his professional achievements, Trowbridge was celebrated for his ability to connect people and his unwavering commitment to the community. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava remarked, “My heart goes out to all those around the County who were blessed by his fun and loving presence.” His close friend, Sarah Artecona, told the Miami Herald, “He saw himself as the connector of people in Coral Gables and throughout the community.”

Members of the Coral Gables Commission also shared about Trowbridge’s impact to Coral Gables. “Our city has lost one of its brightest lights, and our hearts are heavy. No one loved Coral Gables more than Mark Trowbridge,” said Commissioner Ariel Fernandez. “Thank you for being part of our lives and a special part of the Coral Gables Community,” wrote Commissioner Kirk R. Menendez.

Trowbridge’s influence extended beyond Coral Gables. David A. Armstrong, President of St. Thomas University, reflected on his passing, stating, “A great loss to South Florida. A fellow Ohioan, he was larger than life.”

In May 2023, Trowbridge was hospitalized and treated for cancer. Despite his health challenges, he continued to lead with resilience and dedication.

The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce expressed profound sorrow over his passing, stating, “It is with deep sadness that we reflect on the passing of Mark Trowbridge, a beloved community leader whose light will forever shine brightly in our hearts.”

Mark Trowbridge’s legacy as a visionary leader and community connector will continue to inspire and influence the Coral Gables community and beyond.

Fernandez announced Saturday that he asked for City Hall to be lit in burgundy, the color of Multiple Myeloma Awareness, for the week of February 24th, in honor of Trowbridge.

This week, the City of Coral Gables Commission honored Trowbridge by designating the week of February 24th as “Mark Trowbridge Week” in Coral Gables and unanimously approving the initiation of a process to name a downtown city park in his memory.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

His death resulted from heart complications following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.
