The Gazette went quiet, but I never really stopped paying attention. Miami has a funny way of keeping you interested, even when you’re trying to mind your own business.

A lot has changed around here over the years. Some things, thankfully, haven’t.

I’m back, the Gazette is back, and I have a feeling we’re going to have plenty to talk about.

It’s good to be back.

Have people actually been watching the City Commission meetings?

Anyone who has followed the meetings closely has seen Commissioner Castro repeatedly push to represent the concerns and requests of residents. You may not agree with every position she takes, but that doesn't mean her efforts should be dismissed or ridiculed.

And then there is the issue of civility.

Mayor Lago made “civility and decorum” a campaign promise. Yet anyone who watches these meetings knows that the exchanges between the dais can sometimes get personal, particularly when Commissioner Castro is involved.

That raises a pretty simple question:

How can residents be expected to respect the leadership of a commission when the commissioners don't consistently show respect for one another?

I respect everyone who serves on the City Commission. They were elected to represent the people of Coral Gables, and that deserves respect.

But respect has to work both ways.

If we're going to demand decorum from residents sitting in the gallery, shouldn't we expect the same standard from the people sitting behind the microphones?

Just asking.
